We Survived the 2009 MTV VMAs

on September 14, 2009

OK, so Madonna and Britney didn’t make out again.

But Madonna did give a long, heartfelt speech about Michael Jackson.

Kanye West jumped onstage while Taylor Swift was making an acceptance speech for Best Female Video (we didn’t know videos had genders), grabbed the mic and basically said that Beyonce should have won.  99.99% of the time we think these things are staged, but not this time.  His comments were too mean-spirited and Swift’s shock was too real.

Speaking of shockers and Michael Jackson, the Kanye episode reminds us of when second-rate Britpop band Pulp’s frontman, the lovely and lively Jarvis Cocker, got up onstage at the 1996 Brit awards to disrupt and poke fun at an overblown MJ musical moment.  Now THAT was some rock and roll.

And, on the subject of rock and roll, we can’t decide if Lady Gaga’s phantasmagorical and blood-drenched (fake blood — she’s no Iggy Pop) performance of her “Paparazzi” hit was out of control like Motley Crue circa 1988 or just as silly and boring as a Busby Berkeley musical.

We can hardly wait until next year!  Now back to the music…
